Game-changing performers deemed candidates for Motorsports Hall of Fame of America induction are nominated via category — the motorsports disciplines where they achieved greatly.
Many MSHFA categories are self-explanatory: Open Wheel, Stock Cars, Sports Cars, Motorcycles, Drag Racing and Historic.
The At Large category is different. It’s a good fit for nominees who excel in more than one motorsports discipline, and for those whose feats occur outside the main disciplines. Examples of the latter are Aviation, Powerboats and Off Road.
The MSHFA’s newest At Large subcategory — Technical — is the most recent example. It spotlights people who made exceptional contributions to the technology of motorsports, which led to superior vehicle, operator and/or team performance or vehicle, track and/or operator safety gains.
The At Large category includes:
At Large (as of 1989; inaugural class)
Aviation (in At Large as of 2018 + Standalone every 5 Years as of 2020)
Business (in At Large as of 2012 + a Sub-Category every 5 Years as of 2020)
Media (in At Large as of 2010 + a Sub-Category every 5 Years as of 2020)
Off-Road (in At Large as of 2020 + a Sub-Category every 5 Years as of 2020)
Powerboats (in At Large as of 2006 + Standalone every 5 Years as of 2020)
Speed Records (in At Large as of 2016 + a Sub-Category every 5 Years as of 2020)
Technical (in At Large as of 2020 + a Sub-Category every 5 Years as of 2020)
As a reminder, induction is available to American motorsports luminaries who make great achievements nationally and/or abroad. International stars are considered only for their achievements or contributions to American motorsports.
