Driver, builder, team owner
The most successful American rally driver ever, Buffum has 11 national titles and 117 championship event wins. The Connecticut native captured four consecutive SCCA Pro Rally and North American Rally championships (1977-80) and is the only American to win European Rally Championship events (1983 Sachs, 1984 Cyprus). The only racer to contest at least one WRC event over five continuous decades (1960s thru 2000s), Buffum also took the Unlimited Division at Pikes Peak in consecutive years (1982-3). He managed Pro Rally from 1988-92, served on the Pro Rally Board and received the SCCA’s Robert Ridges Award for dedication and sportsmanship. He helped revive the Mt. Washington Hillclimb in 1990 and was Chief Steward from 1990-2000, 2011 and 2017. His Vermont-based Libra Racing built cars for multiple manufacturers that have dominated Pro Rally and the Canadian and North American Rally championships. More recently, Buffum has been Rally Event Manager for Subaru Rally Team USA. Buffum was inducted into the Off-Road Motorsports Hall of Fame in 2004 and the SCCA Hall of Fame in 2006.
