Reyes was introduced to drag racing in 1963 when he read an ad in the Oakland Tribune for "Nitro Burning Slingshot Dragsters" at Fremont Drag Strip. At age 15, he borrowed his dad’s 620 Brownie and talked his way into the photo area. The rest is history. Steve became one of drag racing’s longest-tenured and most prolific photographers. His work appeared in Drag News, Drag World, Drag Digest, National Dragster, Drag Racing USA, Hot Rod, Car Craft, Popular Hot Rodding, and other newspapers and magazines. His books include Quarter Mile Chaos, Funny Car Fever, Slingshot Spectacular, Fuel Altered's Forever, Blood, Sweat and Nitro, Funny Car Follies: 1965-1970, and The Dawn of Pro Stock. He also contributed photos to Tom Madigan's Fuel & Guts and Snake and Mongoose books. Reyes also supplied photos to Johnny Lightning for their diecast toys and Revell for model kits. An honoree at the 2009 NHRA Hot Rod Reunion, Reyes was inducted into the International Drag Racing Hall of Fame in 2002 and the East Coast Drag Racing Hall of Fame in 2011.
