The Mohawk-wearing six-time IHRA Pro Modified champion won 28 national events in 43 IHRA finals. As of 2019, his six titles tie him for #2 on the all-time IHRA professional championship list and his 28 IHRA national victories tie him for third all-time. Cannon was also the first Pro Mod driver to win a championship with a supercharger and nitrous combination. Part of Cannon’s success was his work ethic. “I know one year we did 54 races, counting the eight or nine IHRA races,” he told CompetitionPlus. “I always did forty. I remember one Fourth of July doing five races in one week.” In addition to his six IHRA titles, the readers of Drag Review overwhelmingly voted him 1998 IHRA Professional Racer of the Year. Switching to Funny Cars, Cannon was named 1999 NHRA Rookie of the Year. He returned to IHRA Pro Modified in 2004, then IHRA Top Fuel. In 2010, CompetitionPlus named Cannon its #1 Pro Mod All-Time Top 20 drivers. He is a 2022 International Drag Racing Hall of Fame inductee.
