The Sioux Falls, SD native, is considered one of “The Big Three” of modern winged Sprint Car racing. The other two being 2017 inductee Steve Kinser and fellow nominee Sammy Swindell, Wolfgang’s 140 A-Main event victories put him fifth on the all-time list. His five Knoxville Nationals wins see him third on the all-time list in that event. Over the years, Wolfgang also scored 37 All-Star Circuit of Champions wins and two victories in Eldora Speedway’s famed Kings Royal event (1985, 1990). Wolfgang began his career in the mid-‘70s and quickly became a man to beat. In 1977 alone, he won 45 races, including his first Knoxville Nationals. After a severe accident in 1990, he wasn’t as dominant, but still captured the 1995 IMCA 360 Sprint Car championship and 1996 ASCS 360 National race. Wolfgang was inducted into the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame in 2003 and named National Motor Press Association Driver of the Year in 1985. He was National Sprint Car Poll Driver of the Year in 1985 and ’89.
