Driver
Over the course of his 30+-year career, the Wilbraham, MA native, became the winningest driver in the history of the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour and one of two drivers in NASCAR history to win nine national or touring championships. His nine titles — seven on the Whelen Modified Tour (1989, 1991, 1997-8, 2001-2, 2006) and two in the K&N Pro Series East (1997-8) — tied him with fellow nominee Richie Evans for most national or touring championships. His record 74 Whelen Modified Tour victories left him, at the time of his passing, almost 30 ahead of his nearest competitor. He also holds the records for most tour poles (48) and wins in a season (13 in 1998), and shares with Evans the record for most consecutive tour wins (5). Stefanik also was 1999 NASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series Rookie of the Year at age 41. Said NASCAR Chairman and CEO Jim France upon Stefanik’s death in an ultralight aircraft accident, “He recorded achievements in this sport that are likely untouchable, and his legacy as a champion will endure.”
