Multi-discipline rider
One of the most versatile riders ever to compete, Wise is the only man to win AMA Motocross, AMA Supercross and AMA Superbike nationals. He also podium-ed in his first AMA Grand National Dirt Track race, taking third at the 1982 TT National at the Houston Astrodome, and twice won the ABC Wide World of Sports Superbikers competition (1980-81). Born in McAllen, TX, his father bought him a motocross bike and he quickly began to excel. Switching to a Penton, he became almost unbeatable. Wise was Texas State Motocross Champion in 1974 and won his first AMA 125 National Motocross race in 1976, the first privateer ever to do so. He captured the New Orleans Supercross on his birthday in 1979. In 1983, Wise completed the historic trifecta by winning the Mid-Ohio round of the AMA Superbike Series. Injuries shortly thereafter kept him from winning the multiple championships he seemed destined for. Wise was named 1982 AMA Pro Athlete of the Year and inducted into the AMA Hall of Fame in 2001.
