Official Nomination Bio

As a foreigner, only Oliver’s record in America or on behalf of American motorsports entities should be considered. That record is considerable. In 1969, Oliver and 2020 inductee Jacky Ickx won the 12 Hours of Sebring and the 24 Hours of Le Mans for Ford in a Gulf GT40. Two years later Oliver became just the second driver to collect endurance racing’s “Triple Crown” when he won the Daytona 24 Hours for Porsche. He was the driver for the American-made Ti22 Can-Am effort that posed the greatest threat to the then-dominant McLarens in the 1969 and 1970 Can-Am seasons; in ’70 Oliver finished 2nd three times in the four races he contested. And Oliver was also lead driver for Don Nichols’ American Shadow team in the Can-Am starting in 1971 and culminating in his capturing the 1974 Can-Am championship, winning four of the five rounds. In 1976 at Road America, he captured Shadow’s only F5000 victory. Oliver also was lead driver for Nichols’ Formula 1 program before transitioning into a team manager role.
