Driver, Owner, Promoter, Supporter
The Canadian was so popular as an entertainer it’s easy to underestimate his skill as a powerboat racer and the powerful hand he had in reviving powerboat racing after World War II. In 1942, in the 225 CID class, Guy won 20 of the 21 races he entered. After WWII, Lombardo purchased the 1939 and 1941 APBA Gold Cup Unlimited Class winning boat My Sin, which he renamed Tempo VI. Between 1946 and 1953, Lombardo scored 15 Unlimited or Gold Cup victories. His two major wins were the 1946 Gold Cup and 1948 Ford Memorial contest. Other wins include the 1946, 1950, and 1951 National Sweepstakes Trophy Races; 1949 and 1950 Star Spangled Banner Regattas; and the 1950 and 1951 Buffalo Launch Club Regattas. In 1946, Lombardo broke the record for supercharged Gold Cup-class boats with a one-mile straightway average of 113.031 mph. At the national awards banquet months before his 1977 passing, Lombardo was presented with the Lee Schoenith Award in recognition of his longtime contribution to the betterment of hydroplane racing.
