Official Nomination Bio

Inductee Robin Miller wrote an article that named Bromley as one of the four main figures in the renaissance of racing safety along with inductees Dr. Terry Trammell, Dr. Stephen Olvey, and Wally Dallenbach. Bromley headed the Horton/Holmatro Safety Team at all CART and Champ Car races from 1988-2008. “There was never a better match for a person and a job,” said Olvey, the former Indianapolis M.D. who served as CART’s full time medical director. “He was never excitable and kept everyone else calm in volatile situations.” Bromley played a key role in saving inductee Alex Zanardi at the Lausitzring in 2001. “Lon was the calm, quiet voice on my hip and he had an amazing sense for choreographing the scene, which really helped in Germany,” said Trammell. “He was the best scene commander I’ve ever worked with.” A member of the International Council of Motorsport Sciences, Bromley trained dozens of racetrack EMT/Paramedic/Firefighters on multiple continents and later, at Olvey’s urging, served as Director of Safety at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin.
