DAYTONA BEACH, Florida (July 30, 2024) - There's a new Cat in town! Driven and engineered by 1998 Motorsports Hall of Fame of America (MSHFA) Drag Racing inductee "Dyno" Don Nicholson, the 1969 Mercury Cougar Super Cat now on display at the MSHFA Museum is one of the high-performance cars recently donated to the Hall of Fame of ALL motorsports by Reliable Carriers President and CEO Tom Abrams.
The ultimate expression of a golden-era Cougar straight off the assembly line, the Super Cat was a factory-supported build in conjunction with Car Craft Magazine and Coca-Cola for its "National Thirst Eliminator" Sweepstakes. The car was the Grand Prize in Coke's national consumer contest - along with four other Cougars - but only the Super Cat was fitted with a 428-4V Ram-Air Cobra Jet engine, a close-ratio four-speed transmission topped by a booted Hurst shifter with the classic white ball knob, Lakewood traction bars, chrome Jardine headers and so much more.
Dyno Don recorded a top ET of 12.78 seconds for 109.35 mph in the Super Cat in a test, and the Cougar also made several promotional runs and later competed in F/Stock drag racing.
Thank you so much to Mr. Abrams for this great donation and his kind and selfless support all year of the MSHFA. We’re open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the grounds of Daytona International Speedway (DIS), just outside of Turn 4 in the DIS Ticket & Tours building off of International Speedway Blvd. Please visit www.MSHF.com for more information.
